BRINGING YOU THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS IN THE PURSUIT OF TRUE COMFORT, PERFORMANCE AND FIT
NSC – The English Saddle Co was formed in 2017 by the merger of two of the biggest English saddle specialists in New Zealand: National Saddle Centre NZ (NSC) and The English Saddle Company Ltd.
The National Saddle Centre and its mobile saddle fitting concept was started in the UK in 1992 by Josephine Dancy and was based on her previous ten years’ experience in a retail saddlery shop. This was an enormous learning curve and included much trial and error with different saddle manufacturers, and their methods, both in the UK and in Europe.
NSC (still with Josephine at the helm) arrived in NZ in 2002 and quickly became New Zealand’s largest and most trusted mobile saddle fitting service.
The English Saddle Company (ESC), was formed in 2010 by Catherine Baxter, with the aim of bringing a wider choice of high quality, affordable, hand-made English leather saddles to New Zealand. The mission was to:
– Achieve true comfort, performance and fit for both horse and rider;
– Provide the ability to order saddles that specifically meet the requirements of both the horse and rider;
– Maintain high quality and affordability in all products.
It was a need to source saddles for the now-common wider and difficult to fit horses that saw Catherine launch The English Saddle Co in order to cater for the increasing popularity of the broad, barrel-shaped horse with no wither, large shoulders, high in the hindquarters and with flat backs which are now taking their place alongside the ever-popular Thoroughbreds and lighter types. These horses need particular styles of saddles if they are to be ridden without causing repetitive soreness and injury.
NSC – The English Saddle Co’s customers include those at every level from International and Olympic riders to absolute beginners – and every kind of equine breed, shape and measure of fitness imaginable. All receive the same high level of advice and service and receive unbiased advice on all brands of saddle.
We learn something from every one of our customers. Over the years our detailed records of saddle fittings (including assessments of the horse, drawings of the back, photos and videos) have grown to number into the thousands, and have provided both an enormous reference resource for us, and a tremendous teaching aid for future saddle fitters.
Our Saddle Fitters

NSC – The English Saddle Co will work with you to find the best possible saddle for you and your horse and, if your ideal saddle is not in stock, we can order a saddle specifically to meet your requirements, which will generally be with you around 6 weeks after placing your order.
Our aim is for you and your horse to be as comfortable in your saddle as possible, meaning you can both reach your full potential. We also believe that a good quality, well-fitting saddle should be attainable for all those who wish to do the best for their horse, and so bring you a high-quality range of saddles at attainable prices, with a range of payment options and finance available through Q Card Finance.
I am the managing director and have been running The English Saddle Co (now NSC – The English Saddle Co) for the past 7 years from Feilding, Manawatu. ESC was formed after struggling to find the right new saddle for my ‘hard to fit’ Irish Sports Horse ‘Poppy’ who I brought over from the UK with me nearly 14 years ago, then in 2017 the unmissable opportunity to take on NSC arose.
I have ridden all my life (although now spend more time on the end of a lead rein with my two young daughters!) and hold a BSC in Equine Studies.
I am a Society of Master Saddlers Registered Qualified Saddle Fitter having trained with Josephine Dancy (founder of NSC) and travelled to England for training and examinations in saddle fitting and reflocking.
In my spare time I teach at our local Matakana pony club, and hold ECTP “D” cert. I also have a BAppSc (Equine Studies), a Diploma in Equine Acupuncture and a Certificate in Aromascience- with a strong interest in animals and the therapeutic use of essential oils. All of which gives a more holistic view, particularly helpful with difficult fits.
Along with fellow NSC – The English Saddle Co mobile saddle fitter Sylvie Webby I provide a mobile saddle fitting and rebalancing service throughout the North Island.
I am working towards my Society of Master Saddlers Registered Qualified Saddle Fitter qualification having trained with Josephine Dancy (founder of NSC) and travelled to England for training in saddle fitting and examinations in reflocking.
I have a particular interest in leatherwork and enjoy making bridles and bits and pieces in my spare time, as well as competing my two horses.
Along with fellow NSC – The English Saddle Co mobile saddle fitter Christine Peart I provide a mobile saddle fitting and rebalancing service throughout the North Island.
When you call or email the NSC – The English Saddle Co main office it will be me or Catherine you speak to, doing our best to field the huge number of emails and phone calls that come in on a daily basis (so if we don’t answer straight away then please know we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!)
I am the Admin Manager and also handle incoming enquiries to make sure your enquiry ends up with the right person if it isn’t something we can deal with straight away on the phone.

S.M.S Qualified Saddle Fitter and Household Cavalry Qualified Saddler
Sean is a qualified Saddle Fitter with The Society of Master Saddlers and has over 20 years experience as a saddler. He is available for saddle fitting appointments
Sean also makes saddle fitting trips throughout the South Island – endeavouring to head up to Nelson/ Marlborough and down to Southland/Central Otago at least twice a year – and to other areas on demand.
I’m a qualified McTimoney animal chiropractor and rehab practitioner. As a practitioner the saddle/horse/rider interaction has always been important in my work leading me to research different ideas on saddle fitting and styles. During my undergraduate study I wrote my dissertation looking at the relationship between saddle/horse pressures and the gate kinematics. I was also involved with studies done at the Animal Health Trust in the UK with Mark Fisher using pressure mapping. I have been working with The English Saddle Co for just over a year now and with the formation of NSC – The English Saddle Co I will now be working towards becoming an SMS Registered Qualified Saddle Fitter.
I cover the Lower North Island regularly plus further afield by arrangement, particularly for groups.
I have been a Saddle Adviser for The English Saddle Co for the past 2 years or so and am now excited to now be able to work with NSC’s great range of saddles as well. I will also be beginning my Society of Master Saddlers Saddle Fitter training and learning how to flock and rebalance saddles to bring you an even more comprehensive ‘on-site’ service.
I am based near Morrinsville and cover the surrounding areas including Matamata, Hamilton, Cambridge, and Te Aroha. I look forward to working with you to find your best saddle solution!
I train horses and riders from my yard in Te Horo, Kapiti Coast and started my own training as a saddle fitter with The English Saddle Company nearly 3 years ago. My own teaching is based on developing good rider biomechanics: I had long been aware of the often instant, and certainly ongoing, difference a well-fitting saddle makes to a horse and rider combination and so the ability to be able to offer help in this area through saddle fitting seemed an obvious opportunity to grasp. I am looking forward to being able to fit an even wider range of horses with the addition of the NSC range.
I mainly see clients at my own premises but will travel to the surrounding areas by arrangement, particularly for groups. I look forward to working with you and your horse and helping you to reach your full potential together.
